Card Readers
Hi.Events takes card payments at the box office on Stripe Terminal card readers. Payments go into the same Stripe account as your online sales.
The box office is in early access. Email [email protected] and we'll turn it on for you.
Which Readers Work
The box office sends each payment to the reader over the internet, so it works with Stripe’s internet-connected smart readers, such as the Stripe Reader S700, the Stripe Reader S710 and the WisePOS E. You buy readers from Stripe.
Readers that pair with a phone over Bluetooth or USB, and Tap to Pay on a phone, don’t work with the box office.
Before You Start
- Connect Stripe for your organizer
- Add your organizer’s address, with a street, city and country (plus state and postal code in the US and Canada). Stripe needs a location for the reader
- You need to be an account Admin to pair or remove readers
Pairing a Reader
- On the reader, swipe right from the left edge, enter the admin PIN 07139 and choose Generate pairing code
- In Hi.Events, open your organizer, click Settings in the left sidebar and open Card Readers
- Click Add reader
- Give it a Label your staff will recognise, like “Front door reader”
- Type the Pairing code shown on the reader and save
The reader shows as Online when it’s ready. Click the refresh button to update the status.
If a reader shows Unavailable, re-register (usually after reconnecting Stripe), remove it and pair it again.
Using a Reader at the Door
When staff sign in to the box office they choose the reader next to them. Each reader shows Online or Offline, so they can see if something’s wrong before the queue arrives. They can switch readers during a shift by tapping the reader name at the top of the screen. Every reader paired to your organizer is available to all of its events.
When they choose Card, the reader shows the total and the box office shows Present card on reader. The sale completes as soon as the payment goes through.
If the card is declined, the customer cancels on the reader or the reader goes offline, staff can Try again, Choose another reader or Switch to cash.
Refunds
Card payments taken on a reader are refunded by an organizer from Orders, the same way as online orders.
Tips
- Keep readers charged and on the venue Wi-Fi before doors open
- Name readers after where they sit (“Foyer”, “Bar”), not their model
- Stripe charges its own in-person card fee on reader payments
